Destruction of Jonah’s Tomb (this post is not political; don’t worry)

As someone who studies and holds a deep fascination with religions worldwide, I was deeply saddened to learn about this event.

The militant group, ISIS, deemed the ancient tomb of the Prophet Jonah a source of idolatry, and therefore blasted the structure to ruble. This occurred in the city of Mosul, Iraq, which was formerly known as Nineveh, the capitol of Assyria and the location of the biblical prophet’s ministry.

The belief that Jonah was a prophet of God is held by Jews, Christians, Muslims, and other branch-off faiths of Abrahamic monotheism alike. It is not clear whether the destruction of the prophet’s tomb was meant as an attack towards Christians and Jews, but as of yesterday, it was reported that the final Christian living in the area had been exiled; leaving the ancient city void of a Christian community for the first time in 2000 years.

I was genuinely upset to learn about this and to watch how it took less than a second for an historical landmark dating back into hundreds of years BC to vanish from the face of the earth. This is one less site of religious significance I’ll be able to see in my lifetime, and I pray that number won’t continue to decrease.
